If left to fully mature, the garlic plant would eventually drop all of these tiny cloves into the surrounding soil. They are only produced by hardneck varieties, and should be harvested to allow the plant to put its energy into producing large bulbs in the ground.

These bulbils are genetic clones of their mother plant. However, they tend not to be infected by soil-dwelling diseases and pests as they remain well above-ground as they mature. You can grow garlic from these little guys, but it takes two seasons to produce a sizable bulb. The first year after planting a bulbil will yield a single, undifferentiated clove called a "round". You can then replant these rounds in fall, and the next spring you'll have yourself a standard bulb as you know it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0755/3748/1971/files/garlic_scapes_freshly_harvested_stevensville_montana_family_garlic_seed_farm.jpg?v=1780362240
