About Us
Our History
Located in Bitterroot valley in western Montana, Hayward Garlic strives to growing the best tasting, most nutrient dense garlic on the market. Our family's history is rich in agricultural heritage dating back to the 1600's in United States.
Our family name, Hayward, quite literally means "keeper of the field". Back in the day in most English towns, the Hayward's were tasked with not only protecting the hay fields but the livestock and crops, too.
We do not take this title lightly. Of course, life has changed significantly since those days, but humanity's need for delicious, nutrient-dense foods most certainly has not.
Our Growing Practices
We have been proponents of the organic movement for well over a decade, and our farm has been certified organic for the past four years.
As some of you may already know, the integrity of the USDA's organic label has been slowly diluted by corporate interests intent on gaming the system and ignoring the National Organic Program's (NOP) guidelines. Hydroponics farms can now be certified as organic despite the guidelines stating that farmers must "maintain or improve the physical, chemical, and biological condition of the soil and minimize soil erosion." How does hydroponics, a soil-less production system, maintain or improve soil health? Great question. I and many other organic farmers are asking the same.
Nevertheless, we have decided not to renew our certification due in part to the rising costs of certification and the lack of program integrity. What hasn't changed are our production practices. We do not use any pesticides on the farm that are not approved by the USDA organic program. We have no need to use any herbicides. We sample our soil to analyze deficiencies, and have done so for many years. We amend our soils as necessary with organically approved products, and incorporate cover cropping into our soil management strategy.
Our Garlic
Amending the soil is not the only way a farmer can optimize the nutrient-density of crops. Through years of experience, we have crafted a schedule for foliar feeding our garlic precisely what it needs and exactly when it needs it. Foliar feeding is just a fancy term for spraying nutrient solutions onto the plant leaves so the garlic can quickly absorb the nutrition. Sounds a bit strange, but foliar feeding has been shown to be about 10 times more efficient at delivering certain nutrients to the crop when compared to fertilizing the soil around it.
All our garlic is 100% non-GMO, organically grown, free from pesticides and herbicides (we have no garlic pests here), and downright delicious.
Through this process, we are able to optimize levels of various nutrients in the plant, thereby improving the quality of the product delivered to you. Our customers can be assured what they are purchasing is some of the most nutrient dense garlic on the market.
