Chesnok Red has gorgeous stripes running vertically down its bulb. Grows well in both cold and warmer climates. Mid season maturity. It starts to produce garlic scapes later than other varieties. We harvest Chesnok Red in mid-July in zone 5b. Medium term storage for the home grower. Longer term storage for commercial growers when maintained at proper humidity and temperature.
Flavor: This garlic variety is a culinary favorite, and is often the one we reach for when as we start cooking. It isn't as sharp or spicy when consumed raw, but rather has a richer flavor that can be balanced well with other ingredients. We especially like it in an garlic-herb olive oil dip for our sourdough. When cooked, it's higher sugar content really stands out. It can get quite sweet when roasted, and makes some of the best garlic bread of any variety. One of the best culinary garlic.
Origin: Chesnok is originally from the Republic of Georgia in the Middle East, located between the Caspian and Black Sea. The region is known for its sprawling valleys filled with agriculture, and for it's towering snow-covered peaks.
